Jonathan Hill

Jonathan Hill is a British Conservative politician and former European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union.

Nominated for the role by British Prime Minister David Cameron, Jonathan took office as Britain’s representative in the Juncker Commission in November 2014. As one of 28 European Commissioners, Jonathan was responsible for a programme of reforms to Europe’s financial services, including moves towards creating a European Capital Markets Union to increase the flow of affordable investment capital across the EU. Jonathan stood down as a European Commissioner in July 2016, following the UK referendum on EU membership.

Before becoming a European Commissioner, Jonathan was Leader of the House of Lords and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 2013 to 2014. Prior to that, he served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools from 2010 to 2013.

Jonathan was special adviser to Cabinet Minister Kenneth Clarke (1986 – 1989) and Political Secretary to Prime Minister John Major (1992 – 1994). He was at John Major’s side during the fraught negotiations in Europe in the run up to the 1992 Maastricht Treaty, when Mr Major successfully secured a British opt out, which meant the country retained sterling when other EU states combined to introduce the euro.
